Through the Prism

After passing through the prism, each refraction contains some pure essence of the light, but only an incomplete part. We will always experience some aspect of reality, of the Truth, but only from our perspectives as they are colored by who and where we are. Others will know a different color and none will see the whole, complete light. These are my musings from my particular refraction.

Details

It seems like most of these happened earlier in my life and I'm kind of foggy about them, but here are at least attempts at explanations:

3. Climbed a mountain - Pike's Peak twice and numerous others in Colorado and New Mexico (where we used to always go for family vacations and summer camp) and Virginia and West Virginia (where we lived until I was 7)
8. Said "I love you" and meant it - To family and spouse
9. Hugged a tree - Usually while climbing them/playing on them
13. Stayed up all night long and saw the sunrise - Not since college, but a few times then, some spontaneous and some planned
15. Gone to a huge sports game - The Chiefs would have to be the biggest, maybe 4 or 5 times
17. Grown and eaten your own vegetables - Tomatoes for the most part in our own garden, lots of stuff with/from our parents
19. Slept under the stars - I think in a treehouse as a camp counselor in college was the last time, though
20. Changed a baby’s diaper - My niece about a year ago, and I'm sure one or two other times before that
26. Had an uncontrollable giggling fit at the worst possible moment - Can't remember an exact "worst possible moment," but I smile and giggle when uncomfortable
30. Had a snowball fight - Every time it snowed as a kid, and I still can't resist making and tossing at least one snowball every time it snows now (although I avoid hitting people these days)
31. Screamed as loudly as you possibly can - I usually hold things in, but every once in a while
34. Ridden a roller coaster - Worlds of Fun, Six Flags, and some others, lots of times; at least one time in high school we rode the Orient Express over and over all day for hours
38. Actually felt happy about your life, even for just a moment - Often; if we can't learn to enjoy what we have in life, what's the point?
41. Taken care of someone who was shitfaced - Quite a few times; one of the most memorable included my lonely, gay friend trying to get me to follow him into his bed
42. Had amazing friends - Check out the "Community" links on the right
47. Taken a road-trip - When you grow up in a small town, that's all there is to do
48. Gone rock climbing - Not "real" rock climbing with harnesses and all, but I've climbed lots of rocks while hiking (gone out of my way to find fun ones) and done the harnesses on climbing walls
56. Alphabetized your CDs - Have to; I go back and forth between having them categorized then alphabetized or just one big alphabetical run
58. Sung karaoke - Only twice, both recent, and with a friend singing beside me; those in the audience can testify to my shyness about it
59. Lounged around in bed all day - It's been too long, but this is a favorite thing to do every so often
64. Played in the rain - Lots of times as a kid; anymore it's likely to be running in the rain
65. Gone to a drive-in theater - A handful of times growing up, both with family and friends; I can't remember any of what we saw, but think maybe Predator and Pee Wee's Big Adventure might be among them
68. Fallen in love and not had your heart broken - See current marriage
69. Toured ancient sites - The Mayan ruins of Tulum along the coast of the Mexican Riviera (I've also seen some historical U.S. sites, but I don't count those as "ancient")
70. Taken a martial arts class - One semester of a karate class in college for a P.E. credit and 2 or 3 sessions of a jujitsu class before they moved locations
71. Played D&D for more than 6 hours straight - Often, from late middle school through early college and then again the last couple of years
72. Gotten married - Once, twelve years ago
84. Performed on stage - In choir growing up, in a couple of theater productions in high school, and in the jazz ensemble and show choir in juco
90. Bought a house - Just the one so far, 9 years ago
93. Been on a cruise ship - Twice, both Carnival ships to the Western Caribbean
101. Sang loudly in the car, and didn’t stop when you knew someone was looking - Only in the right mood, but singing along with something in the car is one of the few times I really let go that way
108. Petted a stingray - This past May at Grand Cayman
112. Broken a bone - My first was less than two years ago, but it was my neck and 3 ribs
117. Ridden a horse - Just once or twice on guided things; not for real
121. Slept for more than 30 hours over the course of 48 hours - When sick a few times
124. Taken a canoe trip that lasted more than 2 days - Once when I was 12 my dad included me in a 3-day trip he was leading for college students
126. Eaten sushi - It took a couple of tries to warm up to it and get over the strangeness of the rawness, but now all the time
128. Changed someone’s mind about something you care deeply about - Every once in a while, but a specific incident is escaping me at the moment
129. Gone back to school - Library school and now school leadership
134. Selected one important author who you missed in school, and read - Check out the "Read" links on the right
135. Killed and prepared an animal for eating - Fish a few times and once a chicken with my wife; I've eaten freshly killed stuff at her parents' place often
137. Communicated with someone without sharing a common spoken language - During our one trip to Mexico (not on a cruise); a few times with immigrants/visitors to the U.S.
