Through the Prism

After passing through the prism, each refraction contains some pure essence of the light, but only an incomplete part. We will always experience some aspect of reality, of the Truth, but only from our perspectives as they are colored by who and where we are. Others will know a different color and none will see the whole, complete light. These are my musings from my particular refraction.

But Better Pay Would Still Be Nice

Technically, I am the only Librarian where I work. We have a manager, an assistant manager, youth specialists, information specialists, clerks, and pages. Just one Librarian, the Youth Services Librarian. But those are just our official titles. In the eyes of the public, we are all librarians. And for the most part (other than the clerks and pages) we all do the same type of work. I learned some valuable things getting my library degree and have a few extra responsibilites because of my position, but I think we are all librarians regardless of title. Hierarchical thinking is rarely productive, and I'd much rather focus on individual strengths and styles to create a valuable team.

I just thought I should say that because I've been thinking about it ever since the Annoyed Librarian brought up this issue. This was a response of sorts, I believe, and now she's gotten around to the issue herself.

If I were a supervisor, I'd be hard pressed to make this decision: hire someone who went through 6 years of schooling who earned their LMS or someone who who's worked a desk for 6 years. It's the real world knowledge vs. book knowledge debate.

Pay is always going to be an issue in any Non-Profit organizations. With no "profit" line to measure monetary success, there's no room for increased pay. You balance paying the bills vs. paying staff. The more money you spend on service, the more work staff do to perform their tasks. The more you pay staff, the less they have to work with. For profit entities, the more worth they do, the more money they (theoretically) can disperse to their staff. Non-profit, there's no monetary gain to be spent, no matter how you perform.

I'll continue to do what I've always done. Keep my head down, do my job, and ensure that I do better than the people next to me. It might be working faster, more efficient, or as simple as documenting what I'm doing to ensure it'll get recognized when it comes to review time.

Working with you, I've never thought you were better than me. Oops, I mean I've never thought you thought you were better than me. :)
