Through the Prism

After passing through the prism, each refraction contains some pure essence of the light, but only an incomplete part. We will always experience some aspect of reality, of the Truth, but only from our perspectives as they are colored by who and where we are. Others will know a different color and none will see the whole, complete light. These are my musings from my particular refraction.

Getting a Little Worried

So it's nice that the Chiefs have been competitive and all, but now I'm getting worried they're showing so many signs of progress Carl Peterson is going to get a free ride. Heck, at this pace we're going to start winning some games and lose our high draft position. Although it will be a nice surprise if Tyler Thigpen turns out to be legitimate, is he worth many more years of Carl?

Great news on the college scene, at least. Penn State saved the BCS some trouble by losing, so it's looking like we'll get a true national championship game between the winners of the Big 12 and the SEC.

Not so fast. Doesn't that really depend on who wins the Big 12 and the SEC? We don't even know who is going to win the Big 12 South yet. If OU beats Tech next week the South standings are going to be nearly impossible to sort out. Then Mizzou, who should win the North (I don't have the numbers in front of me, is KU still in the hunt?) could upset the favored South champion and be the Big 12 champ with two losses.

If PSU finishes the season without being upset again, I don't see how it would be fair to send a two-loss Big 12 champ to the national championship in their stead (of course the argument could be made that the Big 10 needs to get with the program, add a team and have a conference championship, but that's another discussion...) Now, if a one-loss South team wins the conference then screw Penn State, too bad so sad, you don't have a conference championship game.

I'm not sure how things are going to shake out in the SEC, but I am morally obligated to include this phrase in any discussion of that conference "Fuck the SEC."

Is your argument premised on the assumption that Bama and Tech are going to be conference champions?

Well, yeah, nothing is said and done. But just the fact that Penn State lost is great news. I'll take most SEC teams over any Big Ten team anyday, because I can at least buy into their being deserving (even if I don't care for the overhype). And, yeah, I'm kinda writing Mizzou off and assuming the south champion will win out with, at worst, one loss. The SEC should send either Florida or Alabama with, at most, one loss. Personally I think any two-loss team to emerge from the Big 12 or SEC is more deserving than a one-loss Big 10 team. So the fact that they lost gives me hope they're basically out of the picture.

I just can't see Mizzou jumping to the top of the BCS, unless they meet and obliterate an undefeated Tech in the conference championship. In that scenario, still, I think the BCS would take a one loss Big Ten team over a two loss Big 12 champ.

However, if Tech continues to play at the level they have been I don't think OU or Mizzou can stop them (heh, or -- it hardly needs to be said-- Baylor). In which case they would without a doubt deserve a spot in the national championship game. And Alabama is the most overrated team in an overrated conference. But, likely to stay that way for the rest of the season (unless Florida has something to say about it).
